Can my bulldog catch influenza?

What Is Canine Influenza?

Canine influenza, or dog flu, is a highly contagious respiratory disease that affects dogs of all ages and breeds. In fact, itโ€™s estimated that 80 percent of healthy dogs that come into contact with an infected dog will get canine influenza. Puppies, senior dogs and dogs with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to infection.

How Does Dog Flu Spread?

Just like the human flu, canine influenza rapidly spreads in confined areas, such as dog shelters and boarding facilities. And since the disease is airborne, it can spread anywhere an infected dog is present, including places like the dog park, pet stores and doggy daycares. The dog flu virus can also live on surfaces and objects, including your own hands. Food and water bowls, toys and even bedding are common sources of infection.

Humans canโ€™t catch canine influenza, but we can pass it from one dog to another through petting and grooming. Thatโ€™s why itโ€™s important to wash your hands after petting any dog โ€“ itโ€™s not just for the sake of your own health, but also for the health of your canine companions.

What Are the Signs of Canine Influenza?

Dog flu shares many of the same symptoms as kennel cough (Bordetella), including coughing and wheezing; however, dog flu can be more serious, especially if not caught early. If you notice any of the symptoms listed below in your dog, itโ€™s important to schedule an appointment with your local veterinarian right away. Not only can you help your pup feel better sooner, but you can also help prevent canine influenza from spreading.

  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Lethargy
  • Nasal discharge

Preventing Canine Influenza

Although the canine influenza virus is highly contagious, there are a few things you can do to help minimize your dogโ€™s risk of infection.

Avoid

Avoid infected dogs and places where there are known outbreaks. This will prevent your dog from being exposed to the virus in the first place.

Wash Hands

Wash your hands after petting every dog. Remember, dog flu can live on surfaces and objects, including your hands. Petting is an easy way to transmit the virus from one dog to another.

Disinfect

Itโ€™s also necessary to clean and disinfect food bowls, toys and bedding frequently. This is especially important if you live in a household with cats or multiple dogs. A recently identified strain of canine influenza โ€“ called H3N2 โ€“ can spread to cats and other pets.

Vaccines

Just like we get flu shots every year, thereโ€™s a dog flu vaccine (designed to help prevent the H3N8 strain of the virus) available for healthy dogs. Talk to your veterinarian about getting your puppy or dog vaccinated.

How to Treat Dog Flu

At-home Care

Rest is one of the most important things our pets need when recovering from illness. Make sure your pup has a comfortable, quiet place to sleep. Also make sure they are getting enough water. Although your dog might not have much of an appetite, itโ€™s critical your dog stays hydrated. Drop some eucalyptus oil into hot war, and place in your dogs room. The aroma will open your bulldogโ€™s nasal passage and facilitate easier breathing.

Visit Your Vet

Unfortunately, there is no quick test for dog flu. The best thing you can do is bring your dog into the vet as soon as you notice symptoms such as coughing, fever or vomiting. If your vet suspects your dog has canine influenza, he or she will treat your pup based on their symptoms. They might prescribe antibiotics for secondary bacterial infections (your dogโ€™s immune system is compromised when fighting the flu, so they might be more likely to contract another illness at this time). In extreme cases, dogs might require hospitalization or IV therapy to treat dehydration.

Fruit and Vegetables For Bulldogs

Bulldogs digest food differently than humans so eating the wrong foods can lead to stomach upset, long-term health problems or possible death. Dogs are known to be carnivores but they can survive on an omnivorous diet. Some would argue there is no need to feed fruit and vegetables but it is a personal choice if you think it is worth including in your bulldogโ€™s diet.

Adding fruits and vegetables to your bulldogโ€™s diet will help ensure that they’re getting plenty of essential nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, to help them stay strong and healthy and boost their immune system. Dog treats can also be high in calories, so fruits and vegetables can provide a healthier alternative.

Other fruits you can feed include apples, apricots, grapefruit, kiwis, plums and pineapple.

FRUITS THAT ARE SAFE TO EAT BUTโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ Apples but not the seeds or core.

๐Ÿ‰ Watermelon but not the rind.

๐Ÿ‘ Peaches and Apricots but not the pits.

๐ŸŠ Oranges but in moderation.

๐Ÿ‹ Lemons because they wonโ€™t enjoy it.

Other vegetables you can feed include cauliflower, every, cucumber, peas and parsnips.

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES NOT SAFE TO FEED:

โš ๏ธ Unfortunately, some are toxic and dangerous for our bulldogs.

๐Ÿฅ‘ Avocados – can cause vomiting.

๐Ÿ’ Cherries – can cause cyanide poisoning.

๐Ÿ‡ Grapes – can cause kidney failure.

๐Ÿ„ Mushrooms – can cause poisoning.

๐Ÿง… Onions – can cause a condition called haemolytic anemia.

๐Ÿ”ถ Rhubarb – can cause tremors and kidney failure.

Bulldogs and Heatstroke

Like most dogs, bulldogs love laying around in the sun. In the cooler months this is fine for short periods of time and if supervised. Any signs of panting and it means they should be directed back into the shade. Panting is how a bulldog regulates their body temperature so while they may not want to go back inside their body is saying otherwise.

Plenty of shade

Heat Stroke is incredibly dangerous for bulldogs. Because of their very short muzzles, they have trouble breathing, which means they also have trouble cooling themselves down when the weather is warm. Bulldogs can also get into heat distress very quickly.

Practice PREVENTION and DETECTION to avoid taking unnecessary ACTION. Brachycephalic breeds, over weight dogs, puppies and older dogs are more prone to heat stroke.

PREVENTION

๐Ÿ‘‰Avoid walking your dogs at the warmest times of the day
๐Ÿ‘‰When walking touch the ground – if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s pads
๐Ÿ‘‰Carry a squizzy jiffy lemon on your walks, if required squeeze it to the back of his throat โ€“ it will break up the foam/phlegm in the throat. Lemonade is also okay as it has citric acid as an ingredient
๐Ÿ‘‰Do not confine your dogs to hot areas in your house. Cool floors are best, use electric fans and draw the curtains
๐Ÿ‘‰Do not leave unattended in your vehicle. Air-conditioning on and windows up
๐Ÿ‘‰Always ensure they have fresh cool water available and access to shade
๐Ÿ‘‰Consider using a cooling coat โ€“ they look great and they will keep your dog’s temperature down
๐Ÿ‘‰Put some apple cider vinegar in his/her water, it keeps phlegm levels down

DETECTION

โš ๏ธVigorous panting
โš ๏ธExcessive drooling
โš ๏ธPale looking
โš ๏ธIncreased breathing pattern
โš ๏ธRed/purple gums or a blue tongue
โš ๏ธIncreased body temperature
โš ๏ธStaggering
โš ๏ธVomitting/diarrhea

ACTION

โœ…Most importantly โ€“ STAY CALM, if your dog detects you are stressed s/he will become more anxious and it will make matters worse. Don’t make a fuss!
โœ…Immediately take him/her out of the sun
โœ…Don’t force him/her to drink water โ€“ but make sure it is available if s/he wants it
โœ…Use cold wet blankets to cover your dog
โœ…Pour cool water on his/her head as the blood flow to the brain needs to be cooled (otherwise brain damage is likely)
โœ…Focus on his/her pads as this is where alot of the heat escapes
โœ…Put some ice packs/bags of frozen veg under their armpits
โœ…Is your bulldog’s panting under control yet?

โš ๏ธIf NO get him into the bath with cold water โ€“ you’re still CALM hopefully!

โš ๏ธIf you cannot control his breathing โ€“ time to get him to your vet. (Firstly cool your car with the air conditioning and lay out some wet blankets)

The Great British Bulldog blog does not endorse putting any bulldog into an Oxygen tent as it would make the situation worse. Your bulldog has been through enough and this would increase their stress levels. It is our responsibility to save our bulldogs’ lives and heat stroke is no joke!
