Bulldogs and Heatstroke

Like most dogs, bulldogs love laying around in the sun. In the cooler months this is fine for short periods of time and if supervised. Any signs of panting and it means they should be directed back into the shade. Panting is how a bulldog regulates their body temperature so while they may not want to go back inside their body is saying otherwise.

Plenty of shade

Heat Stroke is incredibly dangerous for bulldogs. Because of their very short muzzles, they have trouble breathing, which means they also have trouble cooling themselves down when the weather is warm. Bulldogs can also get into heat distress very quickly.

Practice PREVENTION and DETECTION to avoid taking unnecessary ACTION. Brachycephalic breeds, over weight dogs, puppies and older dogs are more prone to heat stroke.

PREVENTION

👉Avoid walking your dogs at the warmest times of the day
👉When walking touch the ground – if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s pads
👉Carry a squizzy jiffy lemon on your walks, if required squeeze it to the back of his throat – it will break up the foam/phlegm in the throat. Lemonade is also okay as it has citric acid as an ingredient
👉Do not confine your dogs to hot areas in your house. Cool floors are best, use electric fans and draw the curtains
👉Do not leave unattended in your vehicle. Air-conditioning on and windows up
👉Always ensure they have fresh cool water available and access to shade
👉Consider using a cooling coat – they look great and they will keep your dog’s temperature down
👉Put some apple cider vinegar in his/her water, it keeps phlegm levels down

DETECTION

⚠️Vigorous panting
⚠️Excessive drooling
⚠️Pale looking
⚠️Increased breathing pattern
⚠️Red/purple gums or a blue tongue
⚠️Increased body temperature
⚠️Staggering
⚠️Vomitting/diarrhea

ACTION

✅Most importantly – STAY CALM, if your dog detects you are stressed s/he will become more anxious and it will make matters worse. Don’t make a fuss!
✅Immediately take him/her out of the sun
✅Don’t force him/her to drink water – but make sure it is available if s/he wants it
✅Use cold wet blankets to cover your dog
✅Pour cool water on his/her head as the blood flow to the brain needs to be cooled (otherwise brain damage is likely)
✅Focus on his/her pads as this is where alot of the heat escapes
✅Put some ice packs/bags of frozen veg under their armpits
✅Is your bulldog’s panting under control yet?

⚠️If NO get him into the bath with cold water – you’re still CALM hopefully!

⚠️If you cannot control his breathing – time to get him to your vet. (Firstly cool your car with the air conditioning and lay out some wet blankets)

The Great British Bulldog blog does not endorse putting any bulldog into an Oxygen tent as it would make the situation worse. Your bulldog has been through enough and this would increase their stress levels. It is our responsibility to save our bulldogs’ lives and heat stroke is no joke!
